It’s no surprise technology is progressing at an exponential rate. Artificial Intelligence has beaten the world’s best player at complex strategy game, Go. Virtual Reality is used in the medtech to help patients overcome their anxiety issues. The rapid advances in technology, coupled with accelerating innovation, are transforming our lives every day. We’ve become increasingly connected to our devices, smart machines get smarter, and a new IT reality has surfaced.
As we move towards a digitally connected world, here are four tech trends you should keep your eye on in 2017.
AI will improve consumer experience
Since its discovery, AI has been used for multiple purposes. Brands have only begun to scratch the surface for applying AI and machine learning to the customer experience. Personalised customer interaction, increased social presence and immediate answers to consumer queries – these are just a tiny portion of the multitude of ways businesses are using AI to enhance consumer experiences. While the use of AI seems to radically simplify our lives, it is still a big challenge to avoid the ‘uncanny valley’ that actually repulses consumers.
More help for cross-browser compatibility
In the past decade, there has been a surge in the number of browsers used for web surfing. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari – the list just goes on. With a plethora of options, it’s pretty much impossible to judge each visitor’s browser preference. Which is why, as complicated and frustrating it may be, cross browser compatibility is always at the top of web developers’ heads.
But here comes the good news. Browsers have begun to step up their game in following W3C specification and (possibly) with better JavaScript libraries, cross-browser compatibility issues may become a thing of the past.
More startups enter the VR arena
VR has taken the tech world by storm. Be it in psychological therapy, social networking or gaming, the applications of VR are seemingly infinite. Microsoft, Facebook, and Google have trail-blazed and poured billions into this perceptual computer wave – but VR is not just the domain for these mega companies. With plenty of room for innovation in this space, tech startups have also jumped on the bandwagon. Joining forces with bigger companies, startups are getting their VR content in front of people all around the world. Without question, VR technology is set to reach consumers in new ways.
Mobile is still the future
Yes, 2017 will still be the year of mobile. The number of smartphone users is estimated to reach 6.1 billion by 2020. That’s roughly 70 percent of the world population! While the complete transition from PCs to mobile devices might take a while longer, the over-dished advice for businesses to optimize their product for mobile viewing still stands. How annoying would it be, needing to “pinch and squeeze” the screen in order to view the content? Chances are that consumers will move along to a competitor.
Several sources have also confirmed that the mobile web brings in more traffic compared to the app. In a nutshell, if your websites are still not mobile optimized, it’s about time you put this on your to-do list!
