App that links startups with investors raises seed funding

Malaysia’s Beam, an app that connects startups to investors, today announced it raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Tinkbig Ventures, a US$10 million fund based in Kuala Lumpur.

Beam, which began as a startup running monthly networking events, launched its “business connectivity, news, and events” app in June. Founders can communicate with investors and set up meetings in the app, as well as submit “fundraising requests.” They can also get in touch with other “ecosystem enablers” such as journalists who are in the network. Users can brush up on what’s happening in their localities by browsing through curated news content.

The company holds events where startups may pitch their ideas to potential investors. The events run in three countries – Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan – and will start in Vietnam and the Philippines soon.

Beam earns largely through event ticket sales and sponsorships.

It has close to 2,000 users from Singapore and Malaysia, 5 percent of whom are investors and enablers.

The company was co-founded by Wallace and Kenneth Ho (unrelated), who are also behind Gaption, a social network that pays users for sharing content.
